Workshop - Addressing growing regulatory challenges in Scientific Diving

September 17th 2024 |  Hobart

5:45 - 7:45 PM

If you are a SCUBA diver, dive officer and have an interest in scientific diving, we really encourage you to come along to this 2 hour, in-person only, event in Hobart.

If you are a diver, does it feel like the bar keeps being raised to be able to jump in the water for your scientific work or study? If you are a dive officer or manager, does it feel like there is a lack of clarity in the legal and institutional frameworks for managing scientific dive operations?

This event has been designed by divers and dive officers in response to a growing discomfort about the way diving for scientific purposes is managed and regulated around Australia. It aims to help clear up the roles of the law (Acts and Legislation), the Australian Standards and your institution, and give you, the scientific diving community, a chance to raise the issues that most impact your work-dive life, and that you see as most inhibiting for broader participation in scientific diving.

It will start with some short presentations on the role of the Australian Standards, and proposed changes to these, followed by a case study on the co-design of risk management for scientific diving within an institution (UTAS). Then a digital survey will guide a facilitated Q&A session with a panel of experts. We hope to achieve a shared understanding of the constraints and opportunities as seen by divers, dive managers and regulators, and some key avenues for moving forward in the most productive way.

It is important to gather as many perspectives as possible, and make sure the biggest challenges are raised and heard. The event will be held at the Grand Chancellor, following completion of presentations for the day at the AMSA conference. Participants who register for this do not need to be registered for the AMSA conference if you are not going to other sessions – this is an independent event, and we want all interested to be able to attend. Registering here (or along with your AMSA registration, on the AMSA rego platform) will ensure you are kept on the mailing list for any updates and follow up.

The event will wrap up at 7:45pm, and we encourage participants to wander over the road to keep the conversation going at the Hobart Brewing Company, who will keep the food trucks and bar open for us. For those sticking around and interested, we hope to have a follow up session on Wednesday 18th at lunchtime for mapping out potential solutions and ways forward.

There are 3 ways to register:
